Online education has been slow to take off because educators have been unable to fully exploit the features that this medium offers. The primary problem is that online education has tried to replicate a physical classroom environment. However, people find that watching a video of someone giving a talk online without any real interaction can become very monotonous and boring.

Professor V.G. Narayanan (Chair of the Accounting & Finance Unit) along with his team at the Harvard Business School has worked to eliminate some of these problems through their online program HBX-CORe. Professor Narayanan found that an asynchronous and flexible model is what is extremely beneficial for adult learners. Although students are looking for a pre-determined learning path, they still want flexibility and the ability to interact with their peers. He also stated that social interactive learning is an essential tool for e-learning.

Given the maturing access to internet and cloud video particularly over mobile devices we are at a point in time where “anywhere anytime learning” is going to be fairly common.
